Pumpkinseed
Introduction
The pumpkinseed is another species that we have had requests to include in our section. Please stay tuned, as we will be expanding more of this page.
The pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) is a member of
the sunfish family, closely related to the bluegill.
The pumpkinseed is brightly coloured in orange, yellow,
green and blue. It has an orange spot near its ear
flap and lacks the dark dorsal fin colouring that characterizes
the bluegill.
Pumpkinseeds share the same spawning
habits as bluegills and the two species often nest
together in the same groups. Spawning lasts from May
to August, and the male guards the nest and newly hatched
fry for about a week.
Fishing Techniques
Pumpkinseeds prefer slow-moving clear water and are
found at depths between two and six feet above a murky,
vegetated bottom. In the late summer and early fall
months, larger pumpkinseeds are found in 20 to 30 feet
of water. Use light pan fish tackle and small insect
larvae, redworms, small fish, fish eggs, snails or
mealworms to entice the feisty fish. The quality of
pan fish fishing outweighs the size of the fish.
