Question 5

Fishing Rod

Question:

"My question is how far up, do brown trout swim to spawn? I have come to the conclusion that they spawn in the same general area in which they themselves were hatched." wrote Mark & Tina.

Answer:

Brown trout return to where they were born. They spawn in the fall and early winter, generally in rivers or tributaries or lakes and large rivers. Like some species, the brown trout returns to their place of birth to spawn. Brown trout fry are considered to be very aggressive and are said to establish territories very quickly. Even as adults, brown trout tend to stay in the same place in their river with little or no movement to other rivers and streams. They can be found in the same location every day, year after year. The only difference may be found in the sea run population. Most will return to their birthplace to spawn, but in some instances may stray.
